Written for the National Flute Association Professional Flute Choir, Nordic Spirits captures the essence of ancient Scandinavia through folk music. Though the tunes are original compositions, they are designed to recall the native melodies of Sweden, Finland, and Norway, along with added harmonic, textural, and contrapuntal elements. The composition is in three sections, and is introduced by breathy wind effects (swirling spirits), which culminates in a loud trilled chord. The first main section features a modal melody with offbeat rhythms and contrapuntal lines. In the middle section, a quiet, tender melody is harmonized by gently moving lines, which eventually lead to more wind effects. The final section of the work has a jaunty melody that is traded between flutes; a canonic texture prevails as the melody weaves its way. Let the Nordic spirits take you away!
