When I was asked to compose a work for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in celebration of Miguel Harth-Bedoya’s 20th season as music director, I envisioned a composition that would honor him and would also give the musicians a chance to shine. I knew that I wanted to include music that would point toward Miguel’s connection with his native Peru; I felt free to interpret and use borrowed styles in my own way—a remix of sorts. I allowed the composition to take shape in the spirit of what “remix” implies: a freeform journey through music that already exists. Some of the music in Remix is drawn from tunes that I had already written, woven into a new tapestry of distinctly different styles and moods. But the glue that holds it all together, the primary theme, is a transformation of the name “Miguel H-B” into music, actual notes that are presented at significant points in the piece either as monuments, transitions, or as resolutions.
